GASR stands for "Group of Aerodrome Safety Regulators". It is an informal group working on harmonizing aerodrome requirements in Europe. Initially the GASR was founded 1996 by few states in Europe but participation has constantly been growing, now counting over 30 member states. Organizations with interest have sent their representatives to meetings. The GASR Working Group has been quite active since it was formed and has held it's 50th meeting at the end of 2007.
The meetings are working sessions where the WG members have usually been working in small groups, so called Task Forces. The aim is to create aerodrome regulation for Europe. The Task Forces have been working on different subparts of the regulation and then presented their work to the whole WG. Lately the WG in whole has been reviewing the work presented by different task forces. Reports from the WG have then been passed on to the GASR Management Group which initially developed a "road map" for the WG to follow and genereally runs the scene.
GASR serves as platform for aerodrome safety issues among the member states and enhances safety for the flying public. Before the formation of GASR no such aerodrome safety forum existed in the area. It was by then grave need for putting safety at aerodromes on the agenda. Aerodrome safety experts from the member states meet and share their views and experiences. This has turned out to be of great value to each who can both contribute and seek knowledge. This also works in the favour of harmonization of aerodrome operation within the member states.
